How much does home EV charger installation cost?

The charger hardware is only part of the cost. The key question is how safely and directly a dedicated circuit can run from the service equipment to the place where the car parks.
Level 1 versus Level 2 charging
Level 1 uses a standard outlet and may be enough for low daily mileage. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and adds miles faster, but usually requires dedicated wiring, a breaker, and professional installation. Ask for charging speed, circuit size, and total installed price.
When is a panel upgrade needed?
An EV charger does not automatically require a new panel. An electrician should perform a load calculation first. If the home has electric heat, a heat pump, a range, solar, or a nearly full panel, load management or a service upgrade may be needed. See our electrical panel upgrade guide.
What changes the installation price?
Major cost drivers include wire length, finished walls, crawl-space access, a detached garage, trenching, conduit, outdoor weatherproofing, permits, and the distance from the main panel. Compare the full scope, not just the charger hardware.
