Electrical panel technology: what changes an upgrade quote?

A full panel is not proof that a home needs a 200-amp service upgrade. The decision starts with a load calculation and the condition of the existing equipment.

100 amps versus 200 amps

Older homes may have 60- or 100-amp service. Heat pumps, electric heat, induction cooking, workshops, and EV charging can increase demand, but the nameplate rating alone does not decide the project. A licensed electrician should calculate the expected load and inspect the service equipment.

Breakers and smart panels

Required protective breakers depend on the circuits and local code adoption. Smart panels can add monitoring or load management for solar, batteries, generators, and EV charging, but they are not automatically cheaper than a conventional upgrade. Why permits matter

Permits, inspection, utility coordination, meter equipment, service conductors, and grounding can change both cost and schedule. Never remove a panel cover or modify energized equipment yourself; use a qualified local professional.
